Please excuse the radio silence on behalf of the Mountainous Words blog for the past few weeks. There’s been big things afoot here in Boulder. Where to start…?
Long story short: if you’re making your livelihood as a writer in 2013, you better get with the times. I love print, love the smell of books, love having shelves of them to gaze at, love weathered paperbacks that have traveled the world with me. And I work in print (and will likely continue to do so), so I hate to see it fading away.
One thing that hasn’t changed is the fact that good writing is something to be appreciated, digested (pun intended) and crafted. The medium is changing but as written print is dying, long live the writer! Thus Mountainous Words Publishing, an e-book / smartphone publisher focused on creating “the greatest stories ever told” Why? Because they will be your stories or, as we humbly suggest, we will help you live those stories.
Initially, we have plans to publish some fun regional guidebooks with an emphasis on making them as readable as they are accurate (ala my best selling guidebook Best Summit Hikes in Colorado). There’s a lot of work in the next few weeks and months: a new website, lots of e-book research and of course, getting the word out. Literally.
It’s ambitious, scary, exciting but above all, necessary. And I must admit I’ve been inspired by many of you who were bold enough to make changes like this in your own lives. You may not have known how much your courage and dedication have infiltrated my own dreams and given them a little more life.
There’s one more person I need to thank, who sadly is not with us anymore. My friend Jonny Copp is the founder of the Adventure Film Fest, his dream to bring the wonderful world of adventure to all of us, to help us to remember the bigger, grander meaning of life. The tagline of the event is “Make Your Own Legends”. As the years have gone by, I feel like I’ve branded that motto on my heart, occasionally daring to daydream what it would be like to actually do something about it.
Well, that day is today.
More updates to come of course… thank you as always for your support. I’m looking forward to all the stories we will create together.
